Why Hair Removal?

Birth of Venus by Alexandre Cabanel 1863Although many believe it is just a recent trend, hair removal has been around for centuries There are a few medical purposes but most hair removal is done for social, cultural and aesthetic reasons. Hair Removal Methods – What’s best?

Ultimately your satisfaction is what is most important. Although I provide only Laser Hair Removal as a professional service, I will try to address some key issues when considering the various methods of hair removal. Let’s take them 1 at a time:

Shaving – probably the most common method, shaving is a right of passage for just about every teenager regardless of the body area and continues on through adulthood. Shaving is economical, although blades sure seem to cost a lot more these days, and fairly easy to master. Satisfaction seems to be a function of hair density and location. If you have a lot of unwanted hair in tough areas to shave, such as underarms and the bikini area then you may not be too happy with the results. Contrary to popular opinion, shaving does not make hair grow thicker or faster. Here is the Wikipedia article on shaving and here are “Top 10 Shaving Tips” from About.com. WebMD has a nice article for “girls” about shaving that has some good basic information.

Plucking – a slow but cheap way to shape eyebrows, plucking is really not a viable method to deal with other areas of excess hair. If you’ve got the time, patience and tolerance for the discomfort then I see no reason why you shouldn’t pluck a way. A good pair of tweezers and a magnifying mirror are essential – check out Walgreens or DrugStore.com.

Waxing – think of it as mass plucking, waxing is quite popular these days. Some might caution that waxing causes big problems – I haven’t seen many. Good clinicians will use top quality products, good technique and have reasonable prices. A couple of drawbacks include discomfort (ouch!), ingrown hairs on regrowth, and the need to let hair grow out prior to treatment.

Electrolysis – A fine needle is inserted into the hair follicle and an electric current is applied to damage the root. Drawbacks include difficulty finding a qualified electrologist, the need for multiple treatments, slow treatments, discomfort, potential infection and scarring.

Laser – Back in the 1990’s a few lasers were found to damage hair follicles sufficiently to slow and, in many cases, permanently stop hair growth. The concept was simple – target the dark root of the hair with laser energy and heat it up to damage it while somehow preventing burns. Now, after a decade or so of experience, we know that the simple idea is a bit harder to accomplish. Lasers are very effective for hair removal when: the right laser is used on the right patient by the right clinician. The right laser – I like the Candela GentleLASE best. The right patient – best results are with light skin, dark hair and no suntan. The right clinician – someone with experience and knowledge. Please explore my website for more information.

Bikini Area Laser Hair Removal

For those who shave the bikini area, pubic area, or groin (pick your favorite term) there are often the annoyances of ingrown hairs, rough stubble, and razor burn. This area of the body is also difficult to wax – imagine all those nooks and crannies! Laser hair removal is a great alternative.

There are a few variations to this treatment. Some people prefer just a little removed (traditional bikini line), others a lot (full brazilian or G-string) – that is totally up to you. I have performed all variations and am comfortable with whatever your preference may be. Here is an interesting article from the New York Times.

Your privacy is important so you can be assured that as a female physician I will protect your privacy. The body area will be draped, exposing only the minimum area needed for an effective treatment. If you come to your appointment on time and the treatment goes as planned you will most likely NOT see anyone other than me.

Remember, the best candidate for effective laser hair removal is light skin with dark hair. Blond and gray hair are not good targets for the laser energy. Sun tanned skin is prone to discoloration (hypo and hyper pigmentation) so avoid the sun and wear sun screen prior to treatment.

The area must be shaved prior to treatment and free of any makeup, lotions, or moisturizers. Please use an antibacterial soap to thoroughly clean the area prior to your treatment.

Facial Laser Hair Removal

Although common to millions of women, unwanted hair on the face can be an embarrassment. This condition can be hereditary and more noticeable in some ethnic groups but it can also be an indication of a medical problem. Effective treatments are available.

Common areas include:

  • Upper Lip
  • Chin
  • Sideburns
  • Brows

After your laser treatment the area will be red – so you may want to schedule your treatment when you can avoid the public for a few hours. You can apply makeup immediately after the treatment but it is best to leave the skin uncovered.

If you wax the area then you should wait until the hair grows out before scheduling your laser treatment.

Leg Laser Hair Removal

Smooth, silky legs are appealing to many although shaving to some can become an everyday necessity. Laser hair removal can provide a long lasting alternative.

If you have a suntan you should wait until the tan fades before having laser hair removal. By far, the most unwanted complications arise from treating tanned skin. So, keep you legs covered, wear sun screen and/or treat your legs in the winter when they are less likely to be tanned.

Underarm Laser Hair Removal

Perhaps one of the MOST effective areas for laser hair removal is the underarms due to the lack of sun tanned skin. Many of my patients have rejoiced at not having to shave their underarms on a regular basis. Rough stubble and razor burn are a thing of the past with laser hair removal. I have also had reports of needing less deodorant after the underarms have been treated a few times with the laser.

Remember, the best candidate for effective laser hair removal is light skin with dark hair. Blond and gray hair are not good targets for the laser energy. Although tanned skin is rarely a problem with underarms, sun tanned skin is prone to discoloration (hypo and hyper pigmentation) so avoid the sun and tanning beds prior to treatment.

The area must be shaved prior to treatment and free of any deodorant, lotions, or moisturizers . Please use an antibacterial soap to thoroughly clean the area prior to your treatment.

Laser Hair Removal Pricing Schemes

Pricing schemes for Laser Hair Removal have come a long way since we first began offering treatments in 1999. While our prices have changed, our pricing method has NOT! We believe that “pay as you go” is the safest and fairest pricing method. In other words, our prices are per treatment.

Common Myths:

Prices for laser hair removal are higher in laser clinics, medical spas, or when offered by plastic surgeons and other physicians. This might be true but varies quite a bit especially considering the various pricing schemes common these days. Use our prices and then get on the phone and call around. You might save quite a bit by driving less than an hour to a qualified clinic.

Package deals save money. You must do the arithmetic – what is the price per treatment? Typically a package includes 6 to 8 treatments that you pay for in advance then it’s up to you to comply with the terms of the contract – be sure to read the fine print. The clinic has your money before you have their service. The possible risks are that you may not like the service, you may not want further treatments, or the clinic may go out of business. The discount should be enough to offset these risks.

This price is good today only. We hate this pressure sales technique in any venue. If the price is so good (and fair) then it should be good tomorrow.

For an annual fee you can have as many treatments as needed. This is an expensive option that plays on a customer’s dream of being hair-free. Many clinics have stopped offering this pricing scheme because the customers kept coming back, even when they couldn’t get an appointment.

The Truth:

Some customers need/want only 3 treatments per year (the summer months) while others can only afford a single treatment at a time. Sometimes life forces us to change priorities and In these financially uncertain times we think it is best for our customers to simply “pay as they go.”
